Wolverley to Whittington.

Saturday was a fine day, Sunday was horrible! From sunny and warm to wet and windy. Then last night we had clear skies again, giving us a light frost and a bright morning.

We were off at 11:00 this morning, with just 15 minutes to the first lock at Wolverley.

Into Wolverley Lock.

We’d had a walk up to the village on Saturday morning. Compact, built on and around the sandstone ridge, it has a beautiful church.

St. John the Baptist church in Wolverley.

The building stands proud on top of the ridge, with a winding track cut from the rock giving access from the village centre.

Rocky road.

Roof lines on the church.

There are more signs of spring at the lock side at Wolverley.

Only two locks today, the second being Debdale.

The storeroom, cut into the rock, is quite spacious, maybe 30 feet long by 10 feet deep. There’s a stone shelf on the long sides.

Another couple of miles saw us catch up with Rock’n’Roll, just below Whittington Lock.

R'n'R in the distance We’re stopping here tonight, and I took advantage of the fine afternoon to get the last of the logs on the roof sawn into rounds. I just got it done and the chainsaw packed away before it started to rain.

Locks 2, miles 3½
